BREAKING NEWS: The Chain is Dead. Long Live the Link! Introducing CrankSync™: The World’s First Bluetooth-Enabled Smart Chain for eBikes
The electric bike revolution has conquered hills, flattened headwinds, and made commuting fun again. We’ve seen massive advancements in battery energy density, motor efficiency, and lightweight frame materials. We have integrated GPS, cellular connectivity, and anti-theft biometrics. But until today, one critical component has remained stubbornly primitive, unchanged in its basic design for over 130 years.
The Final Frontier of eBike Innovation
We are talking about the drive chain.
That oily, heavy, noisy loop of metal that connects your muscular input (and motor torque) to the rear wheel. It rusts. It requires messy lubrication. It stretches. It breaks. And, perhaps most frustratingly in our connected age, it is silent. Your chain knows how hard you are pedalling, what gear you are in, and exactly when it is about to snap—but it has no way to tell you.
Until now.
After four years of stealth development and partnerships with leading aerospace material scientists and silicon valley software engineers, we’re thrilled to introduce the product that changes personal mobility forever.
Introducing CrankSync™: The World’s First Bluetooth-Enabled Smart Chain.
The Revolution Revealed
Before we dive into the staggering technical specifications, you must see the future with your own eyes. This is not just a chain; it is a networked logic array applied to drivetrain physics. Our initial preview image has been updated to showcase the final, production-ready integration with a modern derailleur system.

The CrankSync™ system in action. Shown here in our development lab, the chain, which references the material and light from its initial preview, runs through a rear derailleur mechanism. The glowing links easily mesh with the traditional mechanical components and the cassette.
What Exactly is a “Smart Chain”?
The CrankSync™ system replaces traditional steel alloy links with a proprietary bio-polymer matrix embedded with high-conductivity graphene filaments. While standard chains rely on friction and grease, CrankSync uses passive magnetic levitation within the main rollers, virtually eliminating mechanical wear.
However, the real magic lies in the CrankSync™ Master Link (CS-ML). Every chain includes one specialized, slightly larger link. This link contains:
-
A dual-core Nordic nRF ARM Cortex-M4 processor.
-
A Bluetooth 5.3 Low Energy (BLE) radio chipset.
-
A 6-axis accelerometer and gyroscope.
-
A piezoresistive strain gauge (to measure torque directly at the chain link).
-
A revolutionary 10mAh solid-state ceramic battery (recharged kinematically by the motion of the chain).
The chain is in constant communication with your smartphone or eBike computer, sending data at 100Hz. This opens up features that were previously science fiction.
Real-Time Torque Vectoring
Your eBike’s motor can now react not to how hard you push the pedal, but how much force is applied to the rear cassette. By reading the strain gauge data in real-time, CrankSync allows your motor to deliver perfectly smooth assist, eliminating the surging feeling often associated with hub-motor engagement. This makes a £1,000 eBike feel like a £10,000 mid-drive masterpiece.
Predictive Wear Diagnostics
The embedded sensors measure the exact distance between individual links on every rotation. Forget using a chain checker tool. CrankSync knows when your chain is at 0.25%, 0.5%, and precisely when it reaches 0.75% wear. The companion app sends you a push notification immediately, allowing you to order a replacement link (sold in 10-packs) or a full system refresh, saving your expensive cassette from premature wear.
Haptic Gear Shifting (Available 2026 via OTA Update)
The master link’s gyroscope can detect the precise moment a shift begins (the side-to-side movement as the derailleur moves). The app will gently vibrate your phone or compatible smartwatch at the peak moment of shifting efficiency, training you to shift perfectly under load.
Total Compatibility: Upgrading Your Ride
We know what you are thinking. “This technology must require a whole new proprietary drivetrain, a specialised hub, and a specific eBike frame.”
We are happy to report that the exact opposite is true. The fundamental beauty of the CrankSync™ Smart Chain is that it adapts to you.
The chain is designed around standard 1/2-inch pitch geometry. It is fully compatible with any 8-, 9-, 10-, 11-, or 12-speed drivetrain system. It does not care if you ride a cargo bike, a sleek road eBike, or a rugged full-suspension EMTB. If it has a standard derailleur or a single-speed setup, you can add CrankSync.
How is this possible? The intelligence is modular. You are not buying a chain tailored for a Shimano Deore 12-speed or a SRAM Eagle system; you are buying the CrankSync™ Core (the master link and basic data links). You then configure your total chain length using the Modular Link Architecture (MLA), which allows you to purchase extra standardised ‘passive’ composite links.
Universal Adapters and Modular Design
This image shows the core of our universal compatibility claim. Our engineers designed the master link to interface with any existing drivetrain component, making the mechanical installation surprisingly conventional.

Universal interface demonstration. The hand presents the small, precision-engineered metal adapters that allow the glowing composite chain to interface with standard metallic cassette cogs.
Simplified Installation: A 15-Minute DIY Project
Because the system adapts to standard components, you do not need specialised knowledge or expensive tools. If you can use a basic chain breaker tool and pair a Bluetooth speaker, you can install CrankSync.
The initial synchronisation setup (pairing the master link to the app) must happen before mechanical installation, ensuring the internal battery receives its first full activation charge via a wireless Qi pad (included).
Once the chain is sized and physically installed on your eBike (using the supplied MLA connectors), the true intelligence begins. You initiate the ‘Calibration Drive’ within the app.
The Calibration Protocol
The system needs to understand its operational environment: the specific geometry of your chainring, cassette, and derailleur path. The calibration requires running the chain under load for exactly 60 seconds. Our test rig in Image 3 demonstrates the dynamic sensor analysis occurring during this brief setup.

Installation and Calibration. A user holds a smartphone displaying the CrankSync setup interface. Critically, the glowing blue composite chain is now clearly and correctly routed through the complex rear derailleur mechanism, while their right hand rotates the crankset, initiating the initial 60-second calibration drive.
The App: Your Drivetrain Dashboard
Once calibrated, the chain goes dark (LEDs turn off) to conserve power, activating only during shifts, torque peaks, or if a diagnostic fault is detected. All data is now visualized in the elegant CrankSync™ Companion App (available on iOS and Android).
The app dashboard is designed for deep analytical data dives or simple, at-a-glance status updates. It provides a real-time visualization of the force distribution across the chain links, dynamic efficiency ratings (showing how much power is lost to friction vs. transferred to the wheel), and the precise battery status of the master link.
The screen shown below is the ‘Live Performance’ view, which professional athletes and data enthusiasts are calling the most significant advancement in cycling telemetry since the power meter.
Visualization and Data Streams
The data from the chain’s accelerometers and strain gauges is converted into actionable visualizations. The below image displays the main app screen, showing real-time torque vectoring and segmented efficiency.

Real-World Testing: Performance Unleashed
We didn’t just develop this technology in a pristine laboratory. CrankSync™ was forged in the toughest environments. We provided prototypes to professional riders across all disciplines.
-
Our downhill team reported that the Predictive Wear system saved them three derailleur cages in one season by flagging chain stretch before total failure.
-
Long-distance eBike tourers praised the Kinematic Recharging, confirming that the internal battery remained at 98% even after a 1,200km journey.
-
Commuters loved the silent operation (a 12dB reduction compared to a freshly greased steel chain).
The Ultimate Test: The Commute
For most eBike users, the true test isn’t a race; it’s the daily grind. We took a production CrankSync system and subjected it to the ultimate environment: a wet, gritty, high-torque urban commute.
Our final test image is a dynamic shot capturing the essence of the technology. The glowing blue composite material provides high-visibility safety lights, the system remains silent and efficient despite the road grit, and the Bluetooth connection (visualized as a subtle blue arc to the rider’s device) delivers smooth, responsive power for navigating traffic.

A Final thought: The Future is Linked
The CrankSync™ Smart Chain represents more than just a component upgrade; it is a fundamental shift in how we interface with our light electric vehicles. We are moving from passive mechanical systems to active, networked logic nodes.
We invite you to experience the revolution. The chain is dead. Your smart, connected journey is just beginning. CrankSync Core kits begin shipping today, April 1st, for the introductory price of £401.00 (Standard Silver) or £504.00 (for the glowing ‘Photon Blue’ variant seen above).
(Note: We strongly advise readers to check the calendar before placing an order. While we dream of a networked bio-polymer chain, CrankSync™ is entirely fictional. Happy April Fools’ Day from all of us at E-Bikeshop!)
